Colouring books have risen to become a loved form of active meditation – focusing one’s attention on simple tasks that require repetitive motion. This replaces negative thoughts and creates a peaceful mind. Colouring books are the perfect detox to relieving stress and anxiety from our busy, digital world.
I thought I’d share the process of how Lamice and I created our first ever colouring ‘book’.
We wanted to make a colouring book, but not an actual book per se. We liked the idea of having each page as a postcard, so that they can be sent to loved ones after they’ve been coloured in; and be easy to frame. Each postcard would be on thick paper that can take a range of art media – pencils, inks, paints, etc. We decided on 100% cotton 300gsm watercolour paper.
Lamice sketched out the eight pieces we wanted in our ‘book’. The concept behind the artworks was to combine a bit of nature with a fantastical twist – which very much reflects the White Bird Art & Design brand! She then inked the pieces and scanned them in for reproduction.
I then took those scans and placed them on the back of 5×7″ postcards I designed in InDesign. Now for the difficult part… designing the packaging! This was a continual process of trial and error: tweaking the knifeline, printing and cutting it out to test, repeat. We also received some feedback on our early design, and acted upon them – we really do appreciate feedback, good or bad! This was our first colouring ‘book’ / pack of postcards after all!
We had the packaging professionally printed; however, to save us money, we hand-cut, scored, assembled them ourselves. Was it long and arduous? Very. But the results are worth it! We printed the postcards ourselves on our home inkjet printer with just black ink. We were thrilled to later discover that the ink didn’t smudge when painted on top of!
To add a special touch, we wanted to use our custom made wax seal. We then closed the pack with a bit of glue. However, we are thinking of redesigning the packaging (again) so that the wax seal actually seals the pack (not the glue). Keep your eyes peeled for future designs!
